Fleet’s In!
The history of Trinidad All Stars mas is older than the steelpan movement itself.
Sailor bands have been around for at least a century – no one can tell the precise age of this masque. Like the military systems they mirror, these bands were divided into ranks and classes: Fancy Sailors, Free French, Firemen, Sea Bees, Flour Bag Sailors and White Sailors.

The bands were representative of different areas of Port of Spain. From Hell Yard came USS Bad Behaviour – a band of bad behaviour sailors that mimicked sailors ashore – drunk, dirty and falling down.

Mas and music would marry and the band of sailors accompanied by Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra would join the other masqueraders in the streets of Port of Spain on Carnival Monday and Tuesday.

Remaining true to the traditional sailor mas, Trinidad All Stars continues to participate in Carnival Monday and Tuesday Parade of the Bands. Monday is reserved for ‘pretty’ or ‘fashion’ mas and Tuesday is the purview of the sailor. At present, a DJ augments the sound of steel and rhythm, and in 2020, we will amplify the sounds of steel.

Trinidad All Stars are proud of winning Large Band of the Year for two consecutive years, 2014 and 2015. We are proof positive that pan and mas in carnival are not only relevant, but dynamic and vibrant.

We remain dedicated to the legacy of the first Hell Yard Boys who played sailor for the first time that J’ouvert long ago.
